Hormone therapy for prostate cancer can produce hot flashes in those being treated. These are not dissimilar to those experienced by women undergoing the menopause. But their treatment has not received much attention until now. A group at the Mayo Clinic has looked at treating hot flashes in 18 men with prostate cancer with paroxetine, an antidepressant that’s generally used to treat depression, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The antidepressant treatment, which was continued for five weeks, reduced the frequency of hot flashes from 6.2 per day to 2.5 a day. The intensity of the flashes was also decreased. Previous work has shown that paroxetine reduces hot flashes in women too.
