The short answer: your body has to shed heat to fall asleep and stay asleep, perimenopause narrows how much heat your brain will tolerate before it panics, and the bed itself traps the heat the room would otherwise carry away. Fix those three things and the cold room finally gets to do its job.
September is Perimenopause Awareness Month, so this feels like the week to say it plainly: why it happens, why it is worse at night, why you can go from sweating to shivering in ten minutes, and what to change tonight. The questions we get asked most are answered further down, without a single "consult your physician" dodge (though there is one honest section on when you should).
Your body has to cool down to sleep
Falling asleep is partly a temperature event. Starting about two hours before bedtime, your core temperature begins to fall and your skin temperature rises. That is the body moving heat outward, through the skin, especially the hands and feet, so the inside can cool.
According to the Sleep Foundation, core temperature drops by around 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit over the night, and that drop is part of what lets you drift off and stay under. It is also why your feet go looking for the cold side of the bed on their own: they are radiators.
So "too hot to sleep" is not a comfort complaint. It is your body failing to finish a job it needs to do. Anything that blocks the heat exit, a heavy duvet, a foam pillow, a warm body next to you, a damp shirt, keeps you awake whatever the thermostat on the wall says. That is the first half of the puzzle. Perimenopause is the second.
What perimenopause does to your thermostat
Perimenopause is not estrogen sliding gently downhill. The Menopause Society describes it as the ovaries producing hormones erratically, with less frequent ovulation, so your levels swing up and down, sometimes within the same week. Those swings reach the part of your brain that regulates temperature.
Robert Freedman's lab measured what that does. Every body has a comfortable range, a thermoneutral zone, inside which small changes in core temperature are ignored.
In women without hot flashes that zone was about 0.4 degrees Celsius wide. In women with hot flashes it measured 0.0 degrees: no margin at all. Freedman's conclusion is that hot flashes are triggered by small rises in core temperature "acting within a greatly narrowed thermoneutral zone."
In plain words, your thermostat has become a hair trigger. A rise that your body used to shrug off now sets off the full response: the flush, the sweat, the racing heart, all of it aimed at dumping heat fast.
This is common, and it is not brief. The Menopause Society puts hot flashes at up to 80 percent of women through the transition, lasting a mean of 7 to 10 years, with each episode running 1 to 5 minutes. Night sweats are simply hot flashes that arrive while you are asleep. In short: the room did not change, your margin did. A cold room gives a flash less to work with, but it cannot widen the zone. That is why the fixes below are about the bed and what you wear, not the thermostat alone.
Why hot flashes feel worse at night
By day a flash can escape. At night it cannot. During the day a flash passes while you are upright, moving, and dressed in layers you can peel off. At night you are lying still under bedding designed to hold heat in, so the same flash builds instead of dissipating. You also notice every one of them, because the only thing you are trying to do is sleep.
There is a timing wrinkle too. In Freedman's sleep-lab recordings, hot flashes in the first half of the night came first and the awakenings followed, which means an early-night flash can be the thing that wakes you rather than something you notice after waking.
Later in the night the order tends to flip, and the flash follows an awakening that had another cause. Either way, the heat and the broken sleep feed each other, and a hot bed makes both worse.
And here is why it can feel like it got worse the week the weather turned: nothing about your hormones changed in September, but your bedding did. The light summer sheet became a comforter, the fan went into the closet, the window closed. Your hair-trigger thermostat did not get the memo. Hot, then cold: the swing nobody warns you about
Cold flashes are real. Here is the part that catches people out in the cooler months. A hot flash is often followed by chills. The Menopause Society lists chills and shivering alongside the sweating, and Cleveland Clinic's Dr. Holly Thacker says cold flashes are "very much a thing" in midlife: with hormones fluctuating, "your brain's internal thermostat becomes more sensitive," and the cold spell usually passes in a few minutes, occasionally as long as twenty.
The mechanics are ordinary. Your body sweats to dump heat, the sweat sits in whatever you are wearing, and as it evaporates it pulls heat off your skin. On a September night with the window open, that is the moment you go from throwing the covers off to grabbing for them.
A shirt that holds the sweat keeps you in that cold, damp stretch for longer. A fabric that moves it off your skin and dries fast shortens it. That single fact is why what you wear matters more in a cold room than in a warm one.

One answer at a time. Each one has a different fix, and only one of them is about hormones.
Likely cause: the heat exit is blocked before your core has cooled. Your core needs to drop about 1.8 degrees overnight and most of that happens early. A hot shower right before bed, a heavy duvet, or a warm room stops the drop before it starts.
Fix: move the shower to an hour or two before bed, drop the room to 65 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit, and get under a sheet only for the first hour, then pull the blanket up if you cool.
Likely cause: a hot flash arriving in the second half of the night, when your core is already at its lowest and the smallest rise crosses the line. This is the classic perimenopause pattern, and the sweat is doing its job: dumping heat fast.
Fix: make the flash cheaper. A fabric that moves sweat off your skin and dries quickly, a dry top on the nightstand, and a two-minute reset instead of a lost hour. Then read what to do when you wake up sweating at night.
Likely cause: the cold flash. The sweat that cooled you is now evaporating out of whatever you are wearing, and your sensitised thermostat overshoots into chills. It is not two problems, it is one flash with a tail.
Fix: shorten the tail. Sleep in something that dries fast rather than something that holds the sweat, keep a light blanket within reach instead of a heavy one you have to hunt for, and consider sleeves you can push up rather than bare arms.
Likely cause: a second heater in the bed. An adult puts out roughly 75 to 90 watts of body heat, and under a shared duvet it is aimed straight at you.
Fix: two blankets on one bed, or a lighter one on your side. Separate covers are a temperature strategy, not a marital statement. If the dog is in the bed too, that is a third heater.
Likely cause: your body is doing exactly what it should. Hands and feet are the main heat exits, and they warm up on purpose as your core cools. Hot feet at bedtime usually means the exit is working and the covers are in the way.
Fix: let a foot out, skip the socks, and avoid tucking the sheet at the bottom of the bed. If they feel hot and never cool, mention it to your doctor, since it can have other causes.
The four things keeping you hot in a cold room
The room's air is only one of the temperatures you sleep in. Work through these in order.
- The bedding. A duvet built for January insulates you from the very air you opened the window for. Heavy bedding is at the top of the Sleep Foundation's list of reasons people overheat at night. Swap it for a sheet and a light blanket you can push down with one foot, and keep the heavy one folded at the end of the bed for the cold spell after a sweat.
- The mattress and pillow. Memory foam holds body heat against you. If you wake up hot on your back and cooler on your side, this is probably your culprit. A breathable topper or a different pillow helps more than another degree on the thermostat, and flipping the pillow to the cool side is not a myth, it is heat transfer.
- The person, or the dog. An adult puts out roughly 75 to 90 watts of heat, about the same as an old incandescent bulb, and it is aimed straight at you under the same covers. Separate blankets are a legitimate strategy.
- What you are wearing. Fleece and wool are obvious. Less obvious is a soft cotton tee that soaks up a sweat and then holds it against you, first hot, then cold. The Sleep Foundation puts the ideal room at 65 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit; get the room there, then make sure what is against your skin is not undoing it.
Three changes for tonight
1. Cool the room, then layer so you can shed. Set the bedroom to 65 to 68 if you can. Sleep under layers rather than one heavy thing, and let a foot out. Your feet are one of the body's main heat exits, which is why they go looking for the cold side of the bed on their own.
2. Move the warm shower earlier, and go easy on the nightcap. A warm shower or bath an hour or two before bed, even ten minutes, helped people fall asleep faster in a 2019 meta-analysis, because the warming brings blood to the hands and feet and the body then sheds heat more efficiently afterwards. Alcohol close to bedtime does the opposite: it fragments sleep and disturbs the body's temperature regulation, so a glass with dinner beats one at eleven.
3. Sleep in something that moves sweat, and keep a dry top within reach. Sleepwear cannot treat perimenopause or stop a flash from arriving. What the right fabric does is keep you drier and cooler when a sweat rolls through, so it is less likely to wake you fully and the chill afterwards is shorter. Why do I get so hot when I sleep even when it's cold?
Because the air temperature is the only temperature you control, and it is not the one that matters most. Your body has to move heat out through your skin to fall asleep. If a heavy duvet, a foam pillow, a partner, or a damp shirt blocks that exit, the heat stays with you no matter how cold the room is. Why am I hot at night but cold during the day?

Why are hot flashes worse at night?
Because night is when a flash has nowhere to go. You are lying under covers designed to hold heat, you are not moving, and your core temperature is already on its way down, so even a small rise crosses the narrowed line Freedman measured. His sleep-lab recordings also found that early-night flashes tend to come first and wake you, while later ones tend to follow an awakening that had some other cause. So they are not necessarily more frequent at night. They are more noticeable, more disruptive, and harder to shed.
What is the difference between night sweats and hot flashes?
The Menopause Society's definition is simple: night sweats are hot flashes that happen during sleep. Same mechanism, same trigger, same one-to-five-minute episode. The difference is what they cost you. A daytime flash costs a few minutes of discomfort. A night sweat can cost you the rest of the night, plus a damp shirt and a cold spell. That is why the fix for night sweats is mostly about the bed and what you sleep in, not about the flash itself.
Why do I wake up sweating at 3 a.m.?
Around 3 a.m. your core temperature is close to its lowest point of the night, and you have spent hours under the same covers, so heat has been building slowly. For a perimenopausal thermostat with no margin, that slow build is enough to cross the line, and the body dumps heat the fastest way it knows: a sweat. It is also the hour when a light sleep stage makes you most likely to notice. The practical answer is to make the 3 a.m. flash cheaper: less insulation to shed, a fabric that dries, a dry top within reach, and no clock-watching.
What is the best temperature for sleeping if you run hot?
The Sleep Foundation's range is around 65 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit, and hot sleepers usually do better at the bottom of it. But the room number only works if the bed matches it. A 65-degree room under a winter duvet is a 75-degree bed. Set the thermostat, then subtract a layer, then judge by how the first hour feels. If you are cold when you get in and comfortable twenty minutes later, you have it right.
Does a fan help with night sweats?
A fan does not lower the room temperature, but it does two useful things: it moves warm air away from your skin, and it speeds up evaporation, which is how sweat actually cools you. That second effect is the important one, and it is also why a fan can make the cold spell after a sweat sharper if you are lying in a wet shirt. Fan plus a fabric that dries fast is a good combination. Fan plus damp cotton is a shiver waiting to happen.
Should I sleep naked if I run hot?
Some women do better that way, and if it works, keep doing it. The catch is the sweat.
